Seppelt continues to innovate with sparkling wine under crown seal
To a wine lover, nothing is quite as disappointing as opening a bottle of wine to find that it has been spoiled by cork taint. Over the last few years there has been increasing acceptance of still wine closed by screw cap, however, people rarely consider sparkling wines which are also at risk. To eliminate this risk, and following the lead of the 1994 Seppelt Show Sparkling Shiraz we have now sealed the 2002 Seppelt Original Sparkling Shiraz and 2002 Seppelt Salinger Traditional Method with a crown seal.
When we initially released the 1994 Seppelt Show Sparkling Shiraz the bottles under crown seal sold out within weeks, with the remaining wine under cork taking much longer to sell. It was an Australian first and an initiative we at Seppelt have decided to continue.
Prior to being disgorged and the cork being added to the bottle, all traditional sparkling wines are sealed under crown seal whilst still on lees. By replacing the crown seal and not putting in a cork, we are helping to reduce the loss of carbon dioxide as well as preventing the entry of oxygen into the wine. Seppelt Winemaker Arthur O’Connor noted that,
“premium products such as Seppelt Salinger will continue to improve with time off lees. The crown seal will extend the aging ability and ensure a wine of superior
quality.”
Look out for these new wines in fine retailers or call the Seppelt Cellar Doors for further information.
