Benno Seppelt had been sniffing around Great Western in Victoria since the early 1900s. He was well aware of the quality of the wine emerging from the old goldmining country. Through a friendship with the Great Western’s owner, Hans Irvine, Benno purchased the winery in 1918 and under the guidance of a succession of legendary winemakers, Great Western soon became the epicentre of Australia’s best wines. It’s still happening. Great Western is now home to the Seppelt Victorian Premium Reserve range. These wines are carefully made at Great Western from vineyards in all the best wine growing areas of Victoria: The Yarra Valley, the Strathbogie Ranges, the Victorian Alps, Mornington Peninsula, Drumborg and of course, Great Western. It’s also the place where Australia’s most awarded sparkling wines are produced. In the long drives under the winery hundreds of thousands of bottles of bubbles lie awaiting the day of disgorgement. Great Western is a place with a glorious history, a celebrated present and a certain future. It’s a central part of the wine landscape of Australia. Benno probably didn’t know that would happen when he rode all the way from the Barossa to Great Western for a drink, but he probably had a fair idea. Experience Great Western first hand, visit the Great Western Cellar Door.
