In 1851 Joseph Seppelt purchased a beautiful property in the Barossa Valley, and in true Silesian fashion, named it after himself – Seppeltsfield. He decided to plant vines. So began a pairing of people and soil that has followed the course of Australian history through 152 vintages. Seppelt has pioneered other regions and moved beyond the Barossa’s boundaries to Victoria, but Seppeltsfield has remained the base camp - the family home. It’s at Seppeltsfield in the old blue stone cellars that 9 million litres of fortified wines reside awaiting release. It’s here that Benno began the tradition of putting down a barrel of his best port each year to be bottled and released 100 years later; it’s in the vineyards surrounding the winery that the grapes for the fortified wines are still grown. Nearby is Dorrien, an old, seven hectare vineyard that produces one of Seppelt’s legendary reds - the limited release Dorrien Cabernet Sauvignon. Seppeltsfield’s old stone buildings; cellars and the massive date palms still stand as a reminder (to anyone who needs it) that dreams come true. Experience the history and romance of Seppeltsfield first hand, visit the Seppeltsfield Cellar Door.
